Luke Is Feeling Better!

Praise the Lord! Luke's temperature is gone and his rash is much much better. The swelling in his feet is gone, although his hands are still pretty red and swollen. Does anyone know if you can be allergic to baby powder? I have never used it on Luke, but my mother-in-law just remembered that when she watched Luke Tuesday evening, she used baby powder on him, which she'd never done before. That's the only thing different that Luke's come into contact with. Hopefully we can figure out what the cause of all this was so we can avoid it in the future! Thanks to everyone who was praying for our little boy. Here's a picture of Luke and daddy reading the paper together this morning. I'm so glad to see him getting back to normal--I never thought I could miss a smile so much!

Yes, you can be allergic to pretty much anything. You may want to find out if the baby powder was talcum powder based or cornstarch based. He may be sensitive to perfumed things, but I think the cornstarch based powder is milder and doesn't tend to cause as many reactions. I don't know what kind of laundry detergent you use, but at his young age, he is going to be more sensitive to skin irritants. (Immune system isn't fully developed) I'd try to keep with the hypoallergenic products and those made specifically for babies/sensitive skin. Keep Benadryl on hand...either liquid or the kind you put directly on the rash, but be extra careful with how much you use. Kids are very easy to overdose without knowing it. He is definitely looking more like himself, those puffy red face duck pictures were sad. Hope he continues to feel better.

Wonderful! I am so glad that he is doing better. His skin looks nice and clear in that photo.

You should definitely try to go with hypoallergenic products from this point on- but babies don't really need powders or lotions at this age anyway. When David was in the NICU, the nurses told me to just bathe my baby once a week or so (unless they get dirty for some reason) because they don't actually need to be bathed. If you bathe them less, the natural oils moisturize them, so you don't need any kind of product. And diapers pull moisture away from their bottoms, so powder isn't usually needed to keep them dry. (It is more important for cloth diapers which cannot pull the moisture away.) I hope that helps a little bit. At your next pediatrician appointment, you should ask about what your cousin said; maybe there is a way they can test for those types of allergies. It is better to get to the bottom if it so that it doesn't happen again.

I am so glad that he is going better!!!
