Homemade Applesauce 101

My mom-in-law called me earlier this week and asked if I'd be interested in doing applesauce this year with her and Jonathan's sister. I've only done it once before two years ago, and I must've forgotten how much work it is, because I said "Sure!". I forgot that last time I didn't have a toddler to keep busy. :) It was still a lot of fun, though, and after 12 hours of cutting, mashing, pouring, and boiling, I have 20-some jars of yummy homemade applesauce!!

We did just over three bushels of apples! This isn't even all of them!

First, you have to wash all the apples...

Then it's on to cutting...

And cutting some more...I thought my hands were going to fall off by the end of the day.

Once the apples are cut, you gotta cook 'em down til they're nice and mushy.

Next you grind them up and then add LOTS of sugar!

After you melt the sugar into it, you simply pour the applesauce into jars, boil it for 20 minutes, and--voila--homemade applesauce! Piece of cake!

Luke was such a great helper! He sorted the good apples from the bad apples. :)

The picture is blurry, I know, but that's what happens when you're chasing a one year old. haha

As Requested...

Grandma Cathy asked for more pictures of Luke with his new haircut, so here they are!

This face cracks me up!

Fun Times with Auntie Em and Uncle Jacob

Since my brother and sister couldn't make it up last weekend, they decided to come for a visit this weekend. Luke really enjoyed seeing them again and we had a great weekend together!

With Auntie Em after his bath.
Jacob and Emily really seem to enjoy the book Luke is reading to them.
I think they were getting tired of riding in the car.
Auntie Em is so good about sharing!

Luke's First Haircut!

Well, it was finally time for Luke to get his very first haircut! Auntie Em offered to cut it for him since it was past his eyes, hanging over his ears, and starting to resemble a mullet in back. Yikes! So, without further ado, here it is:

Luke wasn't too sure about it at first!

"Don't cut it too short, Auntie Em!"

Luke finally sat still once we gave him some milk. :)

How's it look?? Here's the before:

And the after! He look so much older now!

Our Week

We've had a fun week, Luke and I. Yesterday we went to Playworld with Grandma and the cousins. Luke only wanted to play with the cars. There were ball pits, about a dozen different playhouses, slides, etc. but he wanted nothing to do with those! He just kept getting in and out of the cars, having the time of his life. :)

"My car is faster than yours,Julia!"

This was Luke's favorite!

"Check out my sweet ride!"

"Look what I discovered today, mom! This really cool drawer!"

Luke is walking so much now--I can't believe he started just over a week ago!

Lunch with Cousins

Luke had a hotdog roast at Aunt Michelle's house today with his cousins. It was great to get outside and enjoy the last of the warm weather before fall sets in!

Luke loved the powdered donuts!

"Mmmm...that was good!"

Grandma came up with the great idea of having the boys show her what they wanted for Christmas out of the toy catalog. Even Luke found some stuff he thought he needed! :)

This picture wasn't from today, but I thought it was cute. Grandma Mary was talking on the phone and Luke decided he needed to talk on the phone, too.

Luke's "First" Trip to the Fair

This wasn't technically Luke's first trip to the county fair, but last year he was barely two months old, so he couldn't really appreciate all the sights and sounds that are the fair! He was a little nervous at first around the big animals (the cows and horses) but by the time we got to the sheep, goats, and chickens, he was warming up a bit to the idea. :) He had Grandma all to himself, which is rare when you are the youngest of nine grandkids! I think he enjoyed getting spoiled. ;)

This is what Luke thought of the horses. You have to click on the picture to really appreciate his face. :)

He wasn't too sure about petting the horse.

"This guy is more my size!"

Luke thought the goats were hilarious!

By the end of the day, we had moved from a face of disgust to a face of contentment.

Grandma spoiled Luke with a $2 carousel ride. I guess that's what grandmas are for...

This picture was taken seriously about 15 seconds after we pulled out of our parking spot. He was one tired boy!

14 Months Old--Look At Me!!

Luke turned 14 months old today and he decided that it was time to move on to bigger and better things! For example, he doesn't give plain old high fives any more. No way...too boring. Instead, he prefers this:

Luke also decided to take a stab at walking. It may not have worked out this time, but he's oh so close! Check out his face right before he falls--it's priceless!

After a few failed attempts, Luke got down to business. Drumroll please!!!!

We are so excited that he finally decided to start walking! And it only took 14 months! ;)

Fun With Cousins

Saturday night, we went over to Jonathan's sister's for pizza. It was fun watching Luke play with his cousins. You can tell he really loves it; it's so cute! The older boys love making Luke laugh. Here are some pictures from the evening and a video. My battery died about six seconds into the video, which is why it's so short. And in Luke's defense, it was his sippie! ;) These two get into all kinds of mischief together...oh what fun lies ahead as they grow older!

The whole gang eating pizza. And, yes, Luke is wearing a pink bib. :)

These two found something to keep them busy.
This picture sums Luke and Julia up perfectly: Luke is constantly busy and must figure out how everything works; in this case, he must unravel the mystery of the sealed lid on this jar of baby food! Julia, on the other hand, is the girliest girly girl you've ever seen! As soon as the camera comes out, she puts on her best smile and says, "Cheeeese!"
Still working on getting that jar opened...
I had to include this picture from last night. Can you tell what we had for dinner?? (Hint: look in Luke's hair!)

Dear Grandma

Dear Grandma,

I heard that you loved the pictures of me from Labor Day weekend but that you were sad there weren't any videos of me. So, here is a mini-documentary of what I did today. I hope you and grandpa enjoy it!

Mommy tried to work with me on my words. I was so busy playing, though, that I didn't really have time to make all those silly noises. I don't think she knows her animal sounds very well because she is always asking me what noises they make!

I really like to play with my school bus. It's fun to push the button over and over and over really fast! I like to dance and shake my head, too!

I also played with Peyton today. She is so funny! I like when she licks my hands--it really tickles! You can hear me say "woof" in this video! And I also do my trick that Aunt Emily taught me. Thanks Auntie Em!

I rode around on my toy some today, which was pretty fun. I just recently figured out that I can move my feet and push myself! Mommy likes that she doesn't have to push me around all the time now. :)

After a while, riding got boring. So I decided to push my toy instead. I'm getting pretty good at it. You would think I am a pro at walking by myself, but I just don't care to do that yet. Don't tell mommy but I'm just holding out on walking to drive her nuts! hehe

Well, I hope you enjoyed this peek into my day, Grandma. I sure miss you and Grandpa a lot and I can't wait to see you again. I love you!!

Hugs and Kisses,

Luke

Labor Day Weekend

We spent a day at the beach and Luke had so much fun!
He crawled all over! Not sure where he's headed here...
I love how he is studying his foot so intently in this picture. It's like he's discovering his toes for the first time! :)
I just adore that blonde hair and those long lashes! Both features from his daddy, of course.
